How many monkeypox cases are in the UAE?
In the latest update (Tue 24 May), The UAE has reported its first case of viral zoonotic disease monkeypox. The Ministry of Health and Prevention said the virus was detected in a 29-year-old visitor from West Africa.
What is monkeypox?
Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease that occurs primarily in tropical rainforest areas of Africa, and is occasionally exported to other regions.
How does it spread?
According to The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention, the disease is transmitted to humans through close contact with an infected person or animal, or with material contaminated with the virus.
The virus is transmitted from one person to another by close contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets and contaminated materials such as bedding. Though rare and usually mild, monkeypox can still potentially cause severe illness.

Avoid contact with animals that may be infected with the virus (including animals that are sick or that have been found dead in areas where monkeypox occurs).
Avoid physical contact with an infected individual and do not share personal items such as towels and bed linen.
